Preventing silver from tarnishing: Hydrogen sulfide and sulfides cause silver to tarnish. Due to sulfur in the air, certain foods (such as vegetables, eggs, etc.) contain hydrogen sulfide. After using silverware, it must be cleaned as soon as possible to avoid sulfide formation (commonly known as oxidation). After cleaning, categorize the utensils and immerse them in diluted alkaline water without chlorine at a temperature above 40°C for 10 to 15 minutes. Then take them out, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely. For spots on the knife blade, first wipe with a cloth soaked in vinegar before rinsing. Another method is to rub the blade with half a cut onion and pure white sugar before rinsing and drying.
Removing tarnish from silver: Soak silverware in saltwater or soda water at a temperature of 78°C with aluminum foil or aluminum sheets for 1 to 3 minutes. An automatic washing tank can maintain a constant temperature while controlling time and circulating water to raise and lower the saltwater level. This electrolytic method is only effective when the silverware is not coated with grease.
Polishing silver: Use a sponge or cotton fabric coated with polish for dry wiping, then use a clean soft towel or cotton pad to polish it. A good polish leaves only an invisible protective film.
Maintaining silver: Proper storage of silver is as important as cleaning it for preserving its beauty. Silver should not be stacked; dried silverware should be placed in rooms free of sulfur and smoke (away from heating), stored in plastic containers without sulfur or wood, one piece of silverware per container. If used daily, place it in a plastic bowl basket to avoid contact with hard objects that could scratch the surface.
Daily cleaning of silver: Clean with warm water mixed with regular dish soap and rinse thoroughly with clean water. All gold and silver products should not be rinsed with bleach or strong acidic cleaning powders.
Due to the active chemical properties of silver, it reacts with sulfur dioxide in the air to form black silver sulfide, causing oxidation on the surface of silver jewelry. Friends who have used silverware or worn silver jewelry may have experienced this: after not using them for some time, they easily oxidize and lose their luster. In such cases, there’s no need to worry; several maintenance methods can help restore your friends' worries about their silver items (jewelry) back to their beautiful shine.
    1. You can add baking soda to clean water before washing and wiping off any moisture on your silver items (jewelry).
    2. Use a polishing cloth or polishing cream for wiping [generally available at jewelry stores; it's important to note that polishing cloths contain special chemicals that cannot be washed].
    3. Use a soft cloth dipped in toothpaste to scrub jewelry, then wash clean with water; wipe dry with cotton cloth (recommended).
    4. Brew strong tea (preferably green tea), use a soft cloth dipped in tea water for repeated wiping of the jewelry; this method is suitable for bracelets and other flat-surfaced items.
    5. Soak your silverware or jewelry in cleaning solution specifically designed for cleaning silver, then rinse thoroughly with clean water before drying it off with cotton cloths to keep it dry. However, it's advisable to minimize using such cleaning solutions because they are chemical products that rely on their corrosive properties for cleaning; long-term use may damage your jewelry.
    6. When not in use, it's recommended to seal your silverware in airtight plastic bags to reduce exposure to air which can slow down tarnishing.
Finally, I remind you that it's best for your jewelry to avoid contact with seawater or hot springs; when not worn, store them in airtight containers like velvet bags or jewelry boxes so that your jewelry remains looking new.
